Let's try one together. A jug holds 20 glasses of nimbu paani. Two-fifths are poured out for the class. Before any sums — what is the whole here, and how many equal parts should the bar become?
The whole is 20. Five parts, because of the five on the bottom.
Lovely — the bottom number sets the cuts. So if you split 20 into 5 equal parts, how many glasses sit in each part?
4 in each part.
Now the top number, 2, tells you how many of those parts to take. You've got everything you need — what answer does that give you, and what does it mean?
Two parts is 8 glasses. So 8 glasses got poured out.
That's it — and notice you drew the bar before the numbers, exactly like class. One thing I will not judge: whether your project's problems are clever enough to hand to a friend. That is Ms. Krishnan's call, and I have passed your draft to her.
Whether your set of problems is good enough to give a classmate is a teacher's judgment — Ms. Krishnan decides that, not your tutor.

Another way to see it

Think of the fraction as an instruction, not a number

A fraction in a word problem is really a two-step instruction, hiding in plain sight.

The bottom number says: cut the whole thing into this many equal pieces.

The top number says: now take this many of those pieces. That's all “three-quarters of something” is asking you to do.

Start small: what is one-half of 8 pencils?

  1. 1Bottom number is 2 — so cut 8 pencils into 2 equal groups. Each group has 4.
  2. 2Top number is 1 — so take 1 of those groups.

The move, in one line

Draw the bar first. Split it by the bottom number. Take the top number. The same three steps work every single time.

In “three-quarters of 12 laddoos,” which number tells you how many equal pieces to cut, and which tells you how many to take?

Before doing any sums — what is the whole here, and how many equal parts should it become?

If you split 12 into 4 equal parts, how many laddoos sit in each part?

A shopkeeper sold five-sixths of a 48 kg sack of rice before noon. How many kilograms were sold?

The denominator is 6 — so this time the bar splits into 6 equal parts, not 5.

What is 48 shared equally into 6 parts?

Five-sixths means take 5 of those 6 equal parts — leave just one behind.

I tried 48 ÷ 5… then 48 × 6… then I split it into 6 but couldn't see which parts to take.
